EPF Money via UPI: EPFO Is Testing Instant Withdrawals, With Rollout Expected Before 2027
Members would see their eligible balance and move it to their bank with a UPI PIN, instead of filing a claim and waiting. A quarter of the corpus would stay locked.

Withdrawing money from your provident fund could soon feel more like a UPI transfer than a paperwork exercise. The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) is testing a facility that would let members move eligible funds from their EPF account to their bank using UPI, as part of its larger EPFO 3.0 overhaul.
The facility has not been officially launched. According to Outlook Money, it is in a trial phase with banks, and a full rollout is now expected before 2027.
How it is expected to work
Under the proposed system, a member's UPI account would be linked to their Universal Account Number (UAN). Members would be able to see how much of their balance is eligible for withdrawal and then authorise a transfer to their linked bank account with their UPI PIN — without filing a claim and waiting for it to be processed.
The limits
The convenience comes with guardrails designed to protect retirement savings:
- Withdrawals would be capped at 75 per cent of total contributions.
- At least 25 per cent would always remain in the account, so that it keeps earning interest and building a retirement corpus.
A delayed timeline
The project has taken longer than first expected. A rollout had been anticipated by April 2026. Outlook Money reports that it is now likely by the end of 2026, with the latest indications pointing to a launch before 2027. The report did not quote an EPFO official on the revised timeline, so members should treat the dates as indicative until the organisation makes a formal announcement.
Part of a wider overhaul
The UPI facility is one piece of EPFO 3.0, a broader effort to modernise the organisation's processes and technology. Other changes already in place include:
- New rules for the EPF, Employees' Pension Scheme and Employees' Deposit Linked Insurance scheme, notified at the end of June 2026.
- Upgrades to the EPFO portal and the UMANG app.
- Automatic settlement of claims up to ₹5 lakh within three days, without manual intervention.
What members can do now
Until the UPI option goes live, withdrawals and advances still go through the existing claim process on the EPFO portal or UMANG app. Members can prepare by making sure their UAN is activated, their bank account and Aadhaar are correctly seeded, and their KYC details are up to date — steps that will matter whichever way they choose to withdraw.
