UP Election 2027 Explained: When It Will Be Held, How Many Seats, and What's at Stake
Uttar Pradesh's 403-seat assembly election is expected in February-March 2027, before the current term ends in May. How the vote works, what happened in 2022 and 2024, the main parties, and the issues likely to decide India's biggest state election.

India's most populous state goes to the polls in early 2027. With 403 seats, the Uttar Pradesh assembly is the largest in the country, and the result will shape national politics in the run-up to the next general election. Here is what to expect.
Quick answer
- When: expected in February to March 2027. The current assembly's term ends in May 2027. The Election Commission has not yet announced dates.
- Seats: 403; a party or alliance needs 202 for a majority.
- Current government: the BJP, led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, in his second term since March 2022.
- Main challengers: the Samajwadi Party (SP) led by Akhilesh Yadav, the BSP led by Mayawati, and the Congress.
- Results: expected in March 2027, after a multi-phase vote.
When will the election be held?
The current UP assembly's five-year term runs until May 2027, so a new assembly must be in place by then. In 2022, voting was held in seven phases between February 10 and March 7, and votes were counted on March 10. A similar timetable is widely expected.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) announces the schedule, usually a few weeks before the first phase. From that moment, the Model Code of Conduct applies: the government cannot announce new schemes, and parties must follow rules on campaigning.
Other states due to vote in early 2027 include Punjab, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur, whose assemblies' terms also end around March. Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh vote later in the year.

What happened last time?
2022 assembly election: the BJP won 255 seats on its own, and its alliance won 273, a comfortable majority. The SP won 111 seats, and its alliance 125, its best showing in a decade. The BSP was reduced to one seat and the Congress to two. Yogi Adityanath became the first UP chief minister in decades to return to office after completing a full term.
2024 Lok Sabha election: two years later, the picture shifted sharply. Of UP's 80 Lok Sabha seats, the SP won 37 and the BJP 33, with the Congress winning 6. The SP-Congress alliance's strong showing in UP was one of the main reasons the BJP fell short of a majority on its own nationally.
Lok Sabha and assembly elections are different contests, with different issues and candidates, but the 2024 result means 2027 is widely seen as a closer fight than 2022.
The main contenders
- BJP and allies: campaigning on law and order, infrastructure such as expressways and airports, welfare delivery, and Hindutva themes, with Yogi Adityanath as the face.
- Samajwadi Party: Akhilesh Yadav's party, built around its "PDA" pitch (pichde, Dalit, alpsankhyak: backward classes, Dalits and minorities), unemployment and price rise.
- BSP: Mayawati's party, once a ruling force, now trying to rebuild its Dalit base after poor results in 2022 and 2024.
- Congress: a small force in the state, whose role will depend on alliances.
- Smaller parties: caste-based regional parties such as the RLD, Apna Dal and others often swing results in particular regions through alliances.
Alliances can change right up to the election, so watch for seat-sharing announcements.

Issues likely to decide the vote
- Jobs and the economy, especially for young people, and recruitment exam controversies.
- Prices and farm incomes, including stray cattle, crop prices and sugarcane dues.
- Law and order, a central plank of the BJP's campaign.
- Caste arithmetic: how backward classes, Dalits, upper castes and Muslims vote.
- Welfare schemes: free rations, housing, toilets and cash transfers.
- Infrastructure: expressways, airports and the development of Ayodhya and Varanasi.
How the vote works
- Voters elect one MLA for each of the 403 constituencies on a first-past-the-post basis: the candidate with the most votes wins, even without a majority.
- The party or alliance with 202 or more seats forms the government and chooses the chief minister.
- Voting uses EVMs with VVPAT paper slips that let voters check their vote.
- To vote, your name must be on the electoral roll. Check it on the Election Commission's voter services portal, and apply for inclusion or correction well before the deadline.

Why it matters beyond UP
Uttar Pradesh sends 80 MPs to the Lok Sabha and 31 to the Rajya Sabha, more than any other state, and its MLAs are a large bloc in the electoral college that elects India's President. Whoever wins UP in 2027 will carry momentum into national politics ahead of the 2029 general election.
We will update this explainer with the official schedule when the Election Commission announces it.
