The IPL's player auction is coming home. The BCCI has said the auction for IPL 2027, the league's 20th season, will be held in Goa in December 2026, the first on Indian soil since 2023. Here is what we know about the date, the format and the rules, and what each team will be looking for.

Quick answer

  • Venue: Goa, according to BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia.
  • Month: December 2026. Reports suggest a window around December 14 to 16, but the BCCI has not announced exact dates.
  • Format: a mini-auction, the last of the current three-year cycle.
  • Retentions: teams must submit retained and released players before the auction; the deadline is expected in November but has not been officially announced.
  • Overseas cap: under the cycle's rules, overseas players in a mini-auction cannot be paid more than a set ceiling, even if bidding goes higher.

Why Goa, and why it matters

"We are going to host it in Goa in the month of December," Saikia told news agency ANI in September. The last three auctions were held abroad: Dubai in December 2023, Jeddah for the mega-auction in November 2024, and Abu Dhabi in December 2025. Bringing the event back to India makes it easier for franchise staff, Indian players' agents and fans, and gives Goa a high-profile sporting event.

Mini-auction vs mega-auction

The IPL runs in three-year cycles:

  • A mega-auction at the start of each cycle, when teams can keep only a few players and rebuild almost from scratch. The last one, in Jeddah, set up squads for 2025.
  • Mini-auctions in the two years after, when teams keep their core, release a handful of players, and use the money saved to fill gaps.

The December 2026 auction is the final mini-auction of the 2025-27 cycle. The next mega-auction is expected before the 2028 season.

How retentions work

Before the auction, each franchise submits a list of players it is retaining and releasing. In a mini-auction:

  • Teams can retain as many contracted players as they like, within squad and purse limits.
  • Released players go back into the pool and can be bought again, often at a different price.
  • Teams can also trade players with each other during the trading window.

Watch for the official retention list. It usually triggers the biggest debates of the off-season, as fans see which stars their team has let go.

How the purse works

Each team has a fixed salary purse for the season. The cost of retained players is deducted from it, and the remaining purse is what a team can spend at the auction. Teams that released expensive players arrive with more money, and often drive up prices for the best players in the pool. The BCCI notifies the exact purse and salary cap before the auction.

The overseas price cap

To stop overseas stars from skipping mega-auctions and then cashing in at smaller ones, the rules for this cycle cap the fee an overseas player can earn in a mini-auction. The ceiling is linked to the highest retention price and the highest price paid at the last mega-auction, whichever is lower. Bidding can go above it, but the player receives only the capped amount, and any extra goes to the BCCI for player welfare.

Overseas players who register for an auction, are bought and then pull out without a valid reason can also face a ban from the league.

Other rules to know

  • Squad size: each team can have up to 25 players, including up to eight overseas players.
  • Uncapped players: Indian players who have not played international cricket for five years, or who have never played for India, count as "uncapped", which affects how much teams pay.
  • Right to Match (RTM): the card that lets a team match the winning bid for its former player is used only in mega-auctions, not in mini-auctions.

What to watch

  • The retention list in November: which big names are released?
  • Purse sizes: teams with the most money left will shape the bidding.
  • Overseas all-rounders and fast bowlers, who are usually in short supply.
  • Young Indian talent from domestic tournaments such as the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, which runs before the auction.
