Why Summer 2027 Clothes Were Shown in September 2026: The Fashion Week Calendar, Explained
New York, London, Milan, Paris, then Delhi: how the global and Indian fashion seasons fit together, and what the labels on the runway actually mean.

Every September, photographs from the runways of New York, London, Milan and Paris fill social media feeds, labelled with something like "Spring/Summer 2027". For anyone outside the industry, the timing looks odd: why show summer clothes as winter approaches, and nearly a year ahead?
The short answer is that a fashion week is mostly a trade event. The clothes on the runway are shown to buyers, editors and stylists about six months before they reach shops. Here is how the system works, and where India fits in.
The two big seasons
The international ready-to-wear calendar has two main seasons.
- February and March: designers show autumn/winter collections, which arrive in stores from about August.
- September and October: designers show spring/summer collections for the following year, which arrive from about January to March.
That is why the shows held in September 2026 carried the label SS27, short for spring/summer 2027.
Why six months early?
Fashion depends on long lead times. After a show, store buyers place orders, factories produce the clothes, and magazines plan their coverage, which is often photographed months before publication. Showing early gives everyone time to do that work before the season begins. Some brands have experimented with "see now, buy now" shows, where clothes go on sale immediately, but most luxury houses still follow the traditional calendar.
The order of the cities
The four major weeks run back to back in a fixed order. For spring/summer 2027 the dates were:
- New York: September 10 to 15, 2026
- London: September 17 to 21, 2026
- Milan: September 22 to 28, 2026
- Paris: September 28 to October 6, 2026
Paris traditionally comes last and is the largest, with many of the biggest luxury houses. You can read our recaps of Milan and Paris.
Ready-to-wear, couture and menswear
The terms on show schedules mean different things.
- Ready-to-wear (prêt-à-porter) means clothes made in standard sizes for sale in stores. Most fashion weeks are ready-to-wear weeks.
- Haute couture is made to measure by hand for individual clients. In Paris, couture has its own, separate weeks, usually in January and July.
- Menswear often has its own weeks too, typically in January and June, although many brands now show men's and women's collections together.
Where India fits
India runs its own calendar, shaped as much by festivals and weddings as by the global seasons.
- Lakmé Fashion Week x FDCI is one of India's best-known fashion weeks, run with the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI). Its Delhi edition this season runs from October 13 to 18, 2026 at the Taj Palace, New Delhi. Read our preview.
- India Couture Week, also organised with the FDCI, focuses on bridal and occasion wear. The 2026 edition, its 19th, opened in Hyderabad on July 23 and continued at the Taj Palace in New Delhi from July 24 to 29.
The timing follows the Indian year. Couture week in July comes ahead of the winter wedding season, and the October ready-to-wear week falls in the middle of the festive period around Navratri and Diwali, when demand for occasion wear is at its peak.
How to read a season label
When you see a label such as AW26, SS27 or Resort 2027:
- AW or FW means autumn/winter or fall/winter.
- SS means spring/summer.
- Resort or Cruise collections are shown between the main seasons and reach stores in late autumn.
- The year refers to when the clothes are meant to be worn, not when they were shown.
So when the next round of photographs appears in February, labelled autumn/winter 2027, you will know they are for the winter after next.
