Karwa Chauth is one of the most photographed festivals of the year, and for many women it is also a long day: a pre-dawn meal, a full day of fasting, an evening puja and then the wait for the moon. Dressing for it means balancing tradition, beauty and comfort.

In most Indian calendars, Karwa Chauth falls on Thursday, October 29, 2026, according to Vedpanchang and calendars based on Drik Panchang. Some calendars list October 28, so check your local panchang or family priest. In the USA and Canada, it falls on October 28.

Quick answer

  • Date: Thursday, October 29, 2026, in most Indian calendars.
  • Moonrise: about 8:18 pm in Delhi; around 8:12 pm in Amritsar, 8:34 pm in Indore and 8:53 pm in Pune, according to Vedpanchang. Times vary by city.
  • Classic colours: red, maroon, pink and gold, long linked with marriage.
  • Best outfits: a saree or lehenga for the puja, or an anarkali or salwar suit for comfort.
  • Comfort first: you will be fasting, so choose breathable fabrics and comfortable footwear.

The day at a glance

  1. Sargi before sunrise: a meal of fruits, sweets such as pheni and dry fruits, traditionally given by the mother-in-law.
  2. The day-long fast.
  3. Evening puja: women gather in their finest clothes, listen to the Karwa Chauth katha and exchange their karwas (clay pots).
  4. Moonrise: the moon is viewed through a sieve, water is offered, and the fast is broken after seeing one's husband.

Customs vary. In Punjab, women gather for the katha in groups. In Rajasthan, many wear their wedding outfit or a traditional chunri. In Uttar Pradesh, some families draw images of Goddess Gauri on the walls.

Outfit ideas

1. The classic red saree. Nothing says Karwa Chauth like red. A red Banarasi or Kanjeevaram silk saree with gold zari is timeless. If heavy silk feels too warm, try a georgette or chiffon saree in red with a gold border: lighter, easier to drape and still festive.

2. Wear your wedding lehenga again. Many women re-wear their bridal lehenga, which is a lovely way to honour the day. If it is very heavy, pair the skirt with a lighter blouse and a simpler dupatta.

3. Anarkali or salwar suit. A floor-length anarkali in maroon, deep pink or orange looks festive and keeps you comfortable through a long day. Add a heavier dupatta for the puja.

4. Saree with a modern blouse. Pair a plain silk saree with a contrasting embroidered or mirror-work blouse. It looks fresh in photographs and lets you reuse the saree for other occasions.

5. Newlyweds: for a first Karwa Chauth, a bridal-style look in red with full jewellery is traditional. Many families gift a new outfit for the occasion.

The solah shringar

Traditionally, women dress in solah shringar, the "sixteen adornments" of a married woman. Lists vary by region, but often include:

  • sindoor in the hair parting and a bindi;
  • mehendi on the hands, usually applied the day before;
  • bangles and a mangalsutra;
  • earrings, a nose ring and a maang tikka;
  • anklets (payal) and toe rings;
  • kajal and alta on the feet.

You do not need all sixteen. Pick the pieces that matter to you and your family.

Comfort tips for a fasting day

  • Choose breathable fabrics such as cotton silk, chiffon or georgette, especially in warmer cities.
  • Avoid tight blouses or waistbands, since you will be sitting for long periods.
  • Wear comfortable footwear, like embellished flats or juttis, rather than high heels.
  • Keep jewellery light during the day and add heavier pieces just before the puja.
  • Apply mehendi a day early so it has time to darken.
  • If you are unwell, pregnant or have a health condition, speak to a doctor before fasting. Many families allow modified fasts.

Men's festive wear

Husbands increasingly match their partners. A kurta in a coordinating colour, such as maroon, cream or gold, with a Nehru jacket works well. Some couples choose matching colours for photographs.

Shop smart

  • Look through your wardrobe first: a saree you already own, with a new blouse or dupatta, can feel brand new.
  • If you buy silk, check for the Silk Mark; read our guide on how to check pure silk.
